Hex – The Game
Invented independently by Piet Hein and John Nash (subject of the recent film A Beautiful Mind), the Game of Hex has enthralled math students for generations. It has the simplest possible rules and is playable with pencil and paper – perfect for students of any age – yet its subtleties have occupied such eminent mathematicians as Claude Shannon (Bell Labs, MIT) and Martin Gardner, the famous mathematics columnist for Scientific American magazine. This download is a complete introduction to the game, including the rules (a brief item), the history of the game, an outline of the most important strategies, some classical problems, and four sizes of playing sheets (8x8, 10x10, 11x11, and 13x13). Also included is a non-technical discussion of the mathematics of finite games, and of Hex in particular.
